Tim Outten is a Cyber Security Analyst at IBM and ex Royal Marine Commando.

He has a purpose-built gym in his back garden which has inspired him to start coaching, where his approach is shaped by his background in the Royal Marines, where discipline, structure, and high standards were essential.

Outside of his work, he’s a father, golf enthusiast, and Arsenal fan.

What’s your favourite bit of equipment and favourite exercise to do?

Th belt squat platform. The elevated standing platform allows for extra depth, and because it’s connected to a belt rather than loaded through the spine, it completely changes how the movement feels. It lets you sit into a really strong, upright squat position while still loading the posterior chain hard.

What decision in this Gym felt risky at the time - but paid off?

Buying the stair master was probably the biggest gamble. Space is always at a premium, and I wasn’t sure whether it would fit comfortably with the ceiling height, or whether it would actually get used once it was in. It’s become one of the most used pieces of cardio equipment in the gym. It’s become one of the most used pieces of cardio equipment in the gym and I can just stick Netflix up on the TV, and just walk while still getting a solid workout in.

Which part of this Gym looks ordinary in photos, but matters most to you?

The overall black aesthetic. When you walk in, it feels like a place where you’re meant to work, focus, and push yourself. That environment has a massive impact on how people train. It sets the tone before you even touch a weight.
